Norwich - Strangers Club, 22 & 24 Elm Hill
This building now the "Strangers Club" dates from the C16th with later modifications. It is timber framed with the ground floor rendered and herringbone red-brick infill to the close-studded first floor.
The 'Strangers' of the club's name refer to the tradesmen and women, Protestant refugees from the low countries who settled in Norwich fleeing Catholicism and seeking political asylum. The first came from Flanders in 1565, but eventually so many arrived that they made up a third of the population of Norwich.
