The Old Shambles, South Street, Sherborne
The Old Shambles, South Street, Sherborne
Grade II Listed late 19th century building, planned as single storey with later first floor addition. Dorset History Centre holds specifications and agreement for building show rooms on site of the Shambles in 1870. The open meat market or shambles stood on the corner of South Street therefore until 1870. There were four slaughterhouses in Sherborne licensed to slaughter on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the Thursday meat market and Fridays for the Saturday meat market. Blue Badge guide Cindy Chant tells us ‘I think the Thursday market began in 1286 but the Saturday market probably began in the early 1900s'.
