The Grade II listed LinkExternal link statue of James Steel sculpted in 1859 by William Frederick Woolington originally stood in Market Street. It was moved to English Street, outside Marks & Spenser, on 6th August 1989. The white marble statue is mounted on a Dalbeattie granite base and plinth. It underwent cleaning and restoration in April 2021.
