High path in Whitbarrow Nature Reserve looks to the sea
The limestone plateau above Whitbarrow Scar has a network of paths crossing both the Nature Reserve and the Forestry Commission land below, some of them created by usage within the CROW Access Land, and some public rights of way such as this one. This high path along the western edge of the upland block is particularly exposed to wind (and today, short but vicious showers) but does offer splendid views denied to those on the more sheltered side. The limestone here has no shale or sandstone capping, so there are no distinct sinks and very few (and only short) caves - probably why I have never visited before despite driving past it almost every weekend for several years on my way between West Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. The view south takes in Morecambe Bay and the Kent estuary, where the railway viaduct can be made out in silhouette in the full sized image. Strong tides here make that another sporting venue with good playwaves for kayakers between the bridge piers.
