Yew and Ash on Whitbarrow Scar
Despite shallow, dry soils and exposure the strong westerly winds, there are scattered trees on the Whitbarrow Scar plateau, and as here, they do better away from the very top. This Yew is mostly upright (as opposed to the flag trees seen higher up) and the Ash seems less stressed than those which are dying on the higher ground. Although it has lost a number of leaves to the recent strong winds, this one doesn't seem to have caught Ash Dieback Disease yet and is big enough not to be troubled by grazing. There is hawthorn and juniper here too (both unpalatable to grazers) though the tangle of sun-bleached branches in the foreground shows that not everything is thriving.
