Gwennap Pit, Busveal - Wesley preaching amphitheatre
Gwennap Pit is actually nearly two miles from the village of Gwennap in the hamlet of Busveal to the east of Redruth. The pit was caused by mining subsidence in the mid-C18th. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism preached here on numerous occasions. After his death the local people turned the pit into a regular circular shape with turf seats. There are steps at half the height of the tiers on both the southern and northern sides of the pit. On first preaching here, Wesley was highly impressed by its acoustics hence his returning here on many future occasions.
