Profile of the Mow Cop tramway
To the right of the trees at the left of the photo is a modest embankment. This was part of an unusual tramway that took coal from three collieries on the east side of Mow Cop (and one on the west, lower down) to the Macclesfield Canal. What made it unusual was that it ran through a 380 yard long tramway tunnel, constructed in 1832 under the hill. Part of its route is now a public footpath. See SJ8656 : Embankment of the former Mow Cop tramway for part of it on the other side of the hill.
