High tide gathering of birdwatchers
Very high tides at Snettisham in autumn or winter provide an amazing wildlife spectacle as tens of thousands of wading birds (largely Knot and Oystercatcher) are pushed over onto the pits. Such spring high tides here are consistently at about 7am/pm so very few that are high enough to occur in the light. When they do there is a good gathering of birdwatchers.
Note: Spring high tides occur when the lunar and solar tides are in phase. The time between them is therefore the lowest common multiple of the two periods (12 hours 25 minutes and 12 hours respectively). It therefore divides by 12 hours so spring tides, at any given location, occur at the same time of day each time. That time obviously varies between locations, near Portsmouth for instance they are at a far more workable 12 o'clock.
