2999 Lady of Legend
Lady of Legend is a recreation of a Saint class GWR locomotive from the early 20th century, all previous 'saints' having been scrapped by the late 1950's. This engine has been built at Didcot railway Centre using donor parts from other GWR locomotives, including 4942 Maindy Hall, which was a development of the saint class. Many parts, including the 6ft 8 1/2" driving wheels have had to be made from scratch, the result being as close as possible to an original saint, which would have been manufactured in 1913/14 if the numbering system had been followed. The saints were revolutionary in their time with far more power than engines of the late Victorian period, whilst they became the forerunners of a series of successful GWR designs such as halls, manors, castles and kings.
