Leeds Industrial Museum - steam engine
This very nice tandem compound led a peripatetic existence before ending up in this empty engine house at Armley Mills. It was installed to a high standard over several years of Saturday working by Brian Kershaw and Duncan Lodge who were volunteers. Brian later became the museum's technical curator. It is steamed on a few days each year and the engine house is usually only open on those days, although there is a view through the windows.

It was built by Woodhouse and Mitchell of Brighouse and has a Corliss valve high pressure cylinder and a slide valve low pressure cylinder.

This view is from beside the low pressure cylinder with the slide valve on the photographer's side and driven from the crank by a drag-ink and crank. The twin slipper crosshead guides are just beyond the edge of the cylinder and the air pump drive is from the crosshead via rocking levers. I had arranged with the museum staff for personal access on a day when the house was not usually accessible.
