Brough Castle

Brough Castle was first established by William Rufus at the end of the 12th century, on the site of a Roman fort, in a strategic location at the western end of a route across the Pennines. The keep dates from this period but extensive living quarters were later added by the Clifford family and the castle was occupied until it burnt down in 1521. Lady Anne Clifford restored the castle in 1659 and lived there for some years, but the building again became unoccupied after 1676 and subsequently fell into disrepair. It came under the protection of the Ministry of Works in 1920 and is now administered by English Heritage.
