Tree-Dotted Rough Grassland near Firpark Wood
The OS map shows this area exactly as it is - rough land with the occasional conifer dotted about. It is a large open area surrounded on three sides by woodland. The woodlands were first planted at some point between the first OS map of here, surveyed in the 1850s, and the 1890s.
Originally the trees in the South belonged to Newbigging Big Wood and the trees in the North to Firpark Wood. The strip of trees to the East didn't warrant a name, for whatever reason. Today though, the whole lot just gets called Firpark Wood and modern maps actually put the name on the bit that was formerly called Newbigging Big Wood.
The wood gets its name from a house called Firpark. There is obviously something commercial attached to the house these days - the light in the distance is coming from there, next to what looked like a large metal barn.
