From 1869 to 1882 Lord William Armstrong developed Cragside into the world's first house to be lit using hydroelectric power. Armstrong's architect Richard Norman Shaw wrote that it was equipped with "wonderful hydraulic machines that do all sorts of things".

The estate was acquired by the National Trust in 1977 and now attracts more than 180,000 visitors each year.
