SE1422 : Roving Bridge at Brighouse Basin

taken 16 years ago, near to Brighouse, Calderdale, England

Roving Bridge at Brighouse Basin
Roving Bridge at Brighouse Basin
Roving Bridges were constructed with spiral ramps to allow the horse towing the barge to cross the waterway without the need to disconnect the towline from the horse's harness. Here the towpath changes from the far side of the canal, where the small red barge is moored, to the near side by the green barge. The superstructure of this bridge was rebuilt in the 20th century, but the straight and spiral ramps on both side of the Calder & Hebble Navigation have been preserved.
