Vale of Health pond
The pond was originally a reservoir dug in 1777 by the Hampstead Water Company in a marshy area then known as Hatchett's Bottom. To meet growing demand for clean water, the aim was to supplement the other reservoirs across the heath.
But by the mid 19th century, water was only used for non-domestic purposes as the quality was poor.
One writer described the water from Hampstead Heath as: "Somewhat disagreeable to the taste and rather turbid. The sediment deposited was considerable, and contained numerous living organic productions".
