SP0785 : Fatherhood, Hurst Street

taken 2 years ago, near to Birmingham, England

Fatherhood, Hurst Street
Fatherhood, Hurst Street
This mural is painted on a wall facing a car park at the bottom of Hurst Street, Birmingham, on the edge of the Chinese Quarter, the Gay Village and the heaps of rubble where the wholesale market once stood. It remembers Tom Knight, mural artist and father, who died unexpectedly in 2021, as explained in this article in the Birmingham Mail LinkExternal link .

The juxtaposition of severe masculinity and parental tenderness recalls the famous 1980s Athena poster L'Enfant (see Wikipedia here LinkExternal link ), which heralded a gentler expression of male identity.

For another memorial mural in the West Midlands, see here SP3478 : NES FOR EVR: Memorial mural, Fargo Village, Coventry.
