Pond Bay, Newbridge Furnace and Forge
Pond Bay, Newbridge Furnace and Forge
Opened in 1496 by Henry VII to cast cannon for use in a war against Scotland. The site remained in the hands of the crown until the 1530s when a larger site was built downstream in the Ashdown Forest. Subsequently, the furnace ceased operating by 1539 though the forge continued in use until 1603 when it was last mentioned in records.

This part of the pond bay is on the eastern side of Kidds Hill which was added at a later date. The possible site of the furnace was at this end.
