Underside of Rugby Road railway bridge, Royal Leamington Spa 2/2
The view is southwest. The width of the bridge is explained below. A single track bridge would have been built across the Rugby Road around 1850, when the London & North Western Railway's direct single line from Rugby to Leamington was carried north to reach the then existing Milverton station (behind the camera). Until then that had been the terminus of the area's first railway, a single-line branch of the London and Birmingham Railway from Coventry, opened in 1844. The blue brick abutment on the right looks very 1850 as does the cast-iron railing seen from the street. When the Rugby to Milverton line was doubled, opening in 1884, the Milverton station was rebuilt between the Rugby Road and Warwick New Road (to the east). Maps show that the platforms of the rebuilt station extended north over the Rugby Road bridge
Link . The bridge was replaced by Network Rail over Easter 2022. It was reported as 118 years old, dating it to 1904, but no details were given.
