Great Massingham - re-painted
The sign is surmounted by the Union Flag and the Royal Air Force Ensign. The picture shows black face Suffolk sheep and Friesian cattle introduced to the UK in the 19th century tended by a monk. Sir Robert Walpole stands centre stage, scroll in hand. He attended school in the village as a child and grew up to become rather famous. On his left a tractor tows a rib-roller while an aircraft flying overhead reminds the viewer that during WWII there was a significant RAF presence at the airfield which was built in 1940 and closed to flying in 1945.
