The hourglass, crossed femur bones and Death’s Head skull are emblems of mortality, while the open book can represent the bible or religious devotion. Scales often refer to the weighing of the soul on the Day of Judgement or they can be trade emblems of a merchant. The figures will represent deceased family members. Dates on the back of the stone range between the mid and late 18th century. There are many fine symbolic stones in the churchyard. For a wider view of this particular area, see NT7273 : Innerwick Churchyard.
