‘Poplar’ taking part in the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen
This photo was taken on the platform of The Kent & East Sussex Railway at Tenterden, Kent. The photo shows ‘Poplar’ as the second train in this double header with ‘Knowle’ being in the front position. ‘Poplar’ was built in 1872 and it is thought to be the first of its class ordered and constructed by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR). The Kent and East Sussex Railway has been synonymous with ‘Terriers’ since buying the 1872 built No 70 ‘Poplar’ in 1901. After a £150,000 overhaul, with the final coat of varnish being completed only days before the event, ‘Poplar’ was able to join with her sister ‘Terrier’ No 2678 ‘Knowle’ on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee. ‘Poplar’s return to the rails also formed part of the Terrier Trust’s 150th anniversary celebrations for these small but mighty engines which first entered service in South and East London.
