L6798 : L1405, Wild Atlantic Way
taken 2 years ago, near to Dooega, Achill, Co Mayo, Ireland
Under the 1993 Roads Act all minor roads in the Republic are numbered on a county by county basis. Each number is prefixed with the letter L. For the best part of two decades most local road numbers however were known only to God and a select handful of selected officials at each county council road department, but in recent years there has been a gradual roll out of directional sign posts displaying the local road number, mainly where they depart from a national or a regional road. Unfortunately, many of these were erected long after Google Street View passed by. Ignored by OSI, Open Street Maps (OSM) are the only maps to show L numbers, but their coverage is very patchy
The Wild Atlantic Way is a tourist trail on the west coast, and on parts of the north and south coasts, of Ireland. The 2,500 km (1,553 mile) driving route passes through nine counties and three provinces, stretching from County Donegal's Inishowen Peninsula in Ulster to Kinsale, County Cork, in Munster, on the Celtic Sea coast.
The route is broken down into 5 sections.
County Donegal
County Donegal to County Mayo
County Mayo to County Clare
County Clare to County Kerry
County Kerry to County Cork
Along the route there are 157 discovery points, 1,000 attractions and more than 2,500 activities. The route was officially launched in 2014.
