St Albans Cathedral from the west
The Abbey Church was promoted to be a Cathedral in 1877. It once belonged to England’s premier abbey before the Dissolution of the Monasteries and in 1154 the Abbot was made the Premier Abbot of England. The cathedral was built like the vanished monastery from the flint and red tiles of ruined Roman Verulamium. The tower dates from 1077, soon after the Norman Conquest. Much of the western end is Victorian.
