The Abbey Church was promoted to be a Cathedral in 1877. It once belonged to England’s premier abbey before the Dissolution of the Monasteries and in 1154 the Abbot was made the Premier Abbot of England. The cathedral was built like the vanished monastery from the flint and red tiles of ruined Roman Verulamium.

The gatehouse of the former Abbey dates from the 1360s and is now part of St Albans School. Abbey Mill Lane passes underneath it.
