The main support member, pivot and operating mechanism have been preserved alongside the modern replacement (seen behind it). The operating mechanism consists of a pair of single acting hydraulic cylinders (one to open and one to close) connected to the bridge by chains and operating on an arc. The mechanism dates from 1880.
