The monument to the fourth Earl of Hopetoun stands on top of Byres Hill and is a prominent landmark from all over East Lothian. It is Category B listed. See Link for details. A notice at the foot of the hill said it was closed because there were birds (of unspecified species) nesting in it. However a passer-by told us it was open, so we planned to climb to the top. When we got to the door, however, the spiral stairs were covered in twigs, nest material and other stuff left by the birds, to the extent that my companion didn't want to risk the ascent in the absence of light and a handrail.
There are two Hopetoun Monuments, either side of the Firth of Forth. I believe the idea was to unite an estate split between Fife and East Lothian. here is the Fife version
