One of the first occupants of Daramona was William E. Wilson (1851-1908), an astronomer of international repute who built an observatory on the site c.1892. The observatory (whose dome has been removed) lies under the ivy to the right of the former adjoining laboratory, whose flat roof has a balustraded parapet. Photographs of the observatory on the NIAH website no longer bear any resemblance to what can be seen today.
