Local Hero
Altrincham Station plaque. Private Bill Speakman was defending a hill in South Korea against encircling Chinese forces when he and his companions ran out of ammunition. He spontaneously charged at the enemy with an armful of grenades, causing serious casualties. His example was followed by the other soldiers, and, when they had exhausted all the munitions, they continued using anything that came to hand - bottles and cans - until help came and they were able to retreat.
Bill was to be seen on TV, as a Chelsea Pensioner, leading the parade of veterans at the 2014 Remembrance Day celebrations. (Residents of the Royal Hospital can be chosen from across the country, not just London.)
