The house comprises the west wing of the premises occupied by the Friars of the Sack, built in 1263, dissolved in 1307 and burnt out by the French in 1377. It was largely modernised in 1869.

The building layout and design is more consistent with a wealthy merchant’s house and this surviving part may have been in commercial use.

The building previously extended to the right where the adjoining 42 Church Square was later squeezed in in the 16th century into a narrow gap between buildings. It is remarkably narrow, only eight feet at the road frontage.
