NT5234 : Lowood Bridge over the Tweed

taken 2 years ago, near to Darnick, Scottish Borders, Scotland

Lowood Bridge over the Tweed
Lowood Bridge over the Tweed
The 18th century bridge replaced an earlier structure downstream that was destroyed by floods. It was the last bridge crossed by Sir Walter Scott as he returned in ill health to Abbotsford in 1832. (For further details see 'Bridging the Tweed' by Jim Lyon, author publication 2019).

The bridge was closed in 2017-18 for extensive renovation work - see NT5234 : Repair work on Lowood Bridge near Melrose (2).
