The church dates back to the 12th century, but is mostly 15th century when Bury St Edmunds was one of the most prosperous towns in England.
St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church was built between 1290 and 1490 as part of the Benedictine Abbey of St Edmund. It was one of three churches built within the precincts, the others being St James', now the cathedral, and St Margaret's which has since been demolished.

Originally dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary; since the Reformation the church has been known simply as "St Mary's". It is a Grade I listed building (LinkExternal link British Listed Buildings)
