Ilfracombe's Holy Trinity church has a varied mix of construction. Originally, it is believed that this spot on the hill was a place of worship dating back to Saxon times. The tower is the oldest part still in use, with higher sections of it from the Norman age. In 1861-4, John Hayward carried out a good deal of restoration, which includes the tower lights, and a clock was added.
