The castle of Aghern actually comprises two towers about 15m apart linked together by a later wall. The towers have had their upper levels removed, and together form the southern corners of a court corresponding to the present coachyard of Aghern House. This was a stronghold of the FitzGeralds that was garrisoned against the English in 1580 guarding the ford over the River Bride. The castle was later sold to Richard Boyle.
