At one time the Social Security office in Corporation Street was the UK’s largest. There are now local offices where claimants may “sign on” and that dubious honour is held elsewhere. A government building constructed in the mid-1920’s as a labour exchange. Latterly known as Corporation Street social security office and now (June 2017) vacant. There is no current planning permission for a replacement building.
