TQ6426 : Old Pond

taken 1 year ago, near to Witherenden Hill, East Sussex, England

Old Pond
Old Pond
The name of the field according to Mayfield's 1844 tithe map that was once the hammer pond for Bivelham Forge. The forge ceased operation around 1787 and the pond drained not long after as it does not appear on either Gardner & Gream's 1795 map or the 1797 first OS draft map. The pond may have extended up to the current road, see TQ6326 : Hawks Pasture and was believed to have been separated from the River Rother, now its southern boundary, by an embankment. It was fed from the River Rother by TQ6326 : Former Leat, Bivelham Forge.
