A view over the rooftops towards the Hare & Hounds on Werneth Low. The pub itself dates back to at least 1754 but records shows there was an inn in the area around the latter half of the 17th century. It was originally a farmhouse on an old Roman Road from Stockport to Melandra castle. In 1929 a young chap called Walter Mansfield took over the pub and was its landlord until 1983, a period of 54 years which may be some kind of record. One of his inimitable ways of drumming up business was the use of a loudspeaker system through which he would call for less talking and more drinking. Any couples seen kissing or canoodling were promptly shown the door. All that has changed and the pub is now part of the Chef & Brewer chain.
