Strutt's North Mill, Belper - basement
This important early mill was home to an interesting museum that closed shortly after this picture was taken - a great loss. I hope suitable homes have been found for all the items.
The original North Mill was built for cotton spinning by Jedediah Strutt in 1786 and was destroyed by fire in 1803. William Strutt built the replacement in 1804 and it is one of the world's oldest surviving iron-framed 'fireproof' buildings. This shows the basement with the substantial stone footings that support both the cast iron columns rising through the mill and the transverse cast iron beams supporting the vaulted floor. The big slab at ground level supported the transmission gearing from the mill's waterwheel.
