The crossing was an occupational crossing leading to reed-beds and the Blythburgh marshes.
An occupation crossing allows a landowner whose land is split in two by a railway line to retain access from one parcel of land to the other. He is responsible for keeping the gate open for trains although most open outwards so as not the impede rail traffic if left open in error.
