I seem to remember that this was previously platform 1b. It was once used by Aberystwyth trains before they were routed to Birmingham New Street and then Birmingham International. I recall many a cold winter night standing here hoping that the Aberystwyth train would deign to appear, and which would have been a class 150 sprinter. Thankfully, the 150s can't now run to Aberystwyth because they are not equipped with the ERTMS signalling system used on the line, but Transport for Wales still manage to inflict misery on its travelling public by running them on services from South Wales to Manchester and Holyhead - journeys of several hours. See ST3088 : Changing trains at Newport.
