The Royal Observer Corps was introduced in 1925 to identify incoming enemy aircraft, and in 1955 with the escalation of the cold war, the ROC had the task of monitoring nuclear blasts and fall out and relaying information back to Group Headquarters. 1563 small underground chambers were built up and down the countryside for this purpose. The Yarrow post, near the A708 to the west of the Gordon Arms Hotel, was opened in September 1961 and closed in September 1991.
