Bell's Cottage. Like a Roman Stone
Bell's Cottage. Like a Roman Stone
The west gable of Bell's Cottage is a wall of two parts. Most of the wall is built from rough, undresses stone. This ends on the left at what seems to be a major crack, it isn't. At some time in antiquity after its 1688 construction, it looks as if the left side of the gable has failed. To the left of this "fault line" the masonry is quite different, being comprised of dressed stone. This stone has always been thought of in the community as coming from the remains of the Roman wall under the summerhouse and kitchen extension behind it. See also NY5664 : Bell's Cottage, Banks.
