The survey was taken in February and March when many of the businesses dependent on the tourist trade were closed. The Central Business District (CBD) of Newcastle, a coastal resort 30 miles south of Belfast, and with a population of just under 8,000, comprises essentially of Main Street, Railway Street, Savoy Lane, Downs Road and the Central Promenade. Many of the businesses at the southern end of Main Street and along the Central Promenade are dependent on the day tripper trade and in the winter months at best are open only at the week ends.
