Leyland National 51

A selection of images from the event to mark 51 years of the Leyland National bus, which brought many surviving vehicles home to Cumbria. The free event on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 April 2023 was based in Whitehaven, the historic Georgian town where the first bus entered public service in March 1972.

The event, organised by Workington Transport Heritage Trust LinkExternal link included a display of Leyland Nationals and other Workington built vehicles at Whitehaven's harbour front together with an exhibition and question and answer session with industry experts at the Portal annex of the Beacon Museum. A free park-and-ride service operated from Lakes College at Lillyhall Business Park. Furthermore, tours of Whitehaven, to the Ennerdale Brewery at Rowrah and the former British Leyland bus factory at Lillyhall where all - over 7,700 - Nationals were constructed was facilitated by many preserved Leyland Nationals attending the event.

In addition, the Saturday evening featured a road run to the coastal village of St Bees. Exhibitors and their vehicles together with volunteers and selected members of the public enjoyed a scenic journey culminating in a fish and chip supper.
