"Behold thyselfe by me,
Such one was I as thou,
And thou in time shalt be,
Even dust as I am now."
Ss Peter & Lawrence church, Wickenby

The first record of a church on this site appears to be about 1100AD. Today's church is a combination of C12 through to C19 alterations. The south arcade dates back to C13. The screen and distinctive ogee headed piscina are medieval. The font is believed to be of Saxon origin. There are some stone heads set into the east wall above the small altar, one of which has been described as Palestinian in style and may have been brought here from the Crusades.

The C12 north doorway has been blocked up. Considerable restoration was made to the nave in 1400.
The bell tower was designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1868 and the porch was added in the C19. The south door to the church is made of heavy oak timbers and dates from C14.

The main east window dates from the C19 depicting episodes in the life of Christ. This was donated by parishioners to the memory of Henry Nevile and his wife, Charlotte. High above it are 2 small niche stained glass windows of the Church's patronal Saints. St Peter has always been a venerated saint, but St Lawrence was much revered in medieval times. He is depicted holding a symbolic gridiron. The north stained glass window shows the crucifixion and was dedicated to the memory of James Ellerton Bigland, Rector from 1878 to 1889. The south window is dedicated to Christopher Nevile and his wife Gertrude.

On the South Wall of the nave is a window containing rare stained glass which dates back to early C14. Each originally depicted family shields of Percy, Umfraville and Beaumont. It is though that these were placed here by the wealthy Chamberlain family, all of who had huge estates in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. Unfortunately only the shield of the Beaumont is entire. The "A" above the middle shield may related to the Amcotts family who also held estates here. The type of yellow silver stain on the glass is quite indicative of its early age. It is rare for such old stained glass to survive. It is a salutary thought that this delicate glass has been in place for nearly 700 years.

The rood screen is medieval and the font has been used since C14 to baptise children and adults from Wickenby.

The south aisle contains a brass with alabaster surround to the memory of Henry Millner, Gent and is dated 1635.

The organ is currently at the west end of the north nave wall but will be moved, probably back to its original position in the chancel, as the church are installing a new kitchen and toilet facility for the parishioners.
