This example of Podiceps cristatus was as entertaining as this species usually is, diving beneath the water for 20 or so seconds before popping back up several tens of metres away. Shamefully, this type of bird was almost hunted to extinction in the 19th century in the name of ladies' fashion (it seems our forebears thought having a dead bird on one's head was à la mode). This threat lead to the formation of the RSPB so some good came of the barbarity. This bird was seen a few seconds later but underwater this time SU1782 : Great crested grebe diving, Coate Water Country Park, Swindon
