SC2177 : Niarbyl Fault

taken 10 months ago, near to Dalby, Isle of Man

Niarbyl Fault
Niarbyl Fault
The fault here is of great interest to geologists, because it is part of the junction of the palaeocontinents of Laurentia, which contained what are now North America, the north of Ireland and of the Isle of Man, and Scotland. Avalonia contained England and part of Europe. The line where the continents are joined is called the Iapetus Suture. The Niarbyl Fault is the only place where part of the suture can be so clearly seen at the surface of the Earth. On the left are rocks of the Dalby Group, formed in Laurentia (proto-America) about 430 million years ago, and on the right are rocks of the Manx Group, formed in Avalonia (proto-Northern-Europe) about 475 million years ago.
