Ventry Street, Belfast

Ventry Street runs westwards off the Dublin Road towards Gt Victoria Street. It is between Harmony Street J3373 : Harmony Street, Belfast and Ventry lane J3373 : Ventry Lane, Belfast. It includes what might be the last car repair business left in central Belfast. The monstrosity in the background is Fanum House J3373 : Fanum House, Belfast in Gt Victoria Street. It is now a candidate for demolition and replacement by the proposed 11-storey “Meridian Tower”.

Fanum House, Belfast

Fanum House, Gt Victoria Street, Belfast was completed in the mid-60’s and, at the time, was, at eleven storeys, the second tallest building in Belfast. I remember reading that the architect had designed it in this colour because it would not show the, inevitable, marks of pollution caused by burning coal in most industrial, commercial and domestic premises. There have been several proposals for the redevelopment of the site which had the following planning permission (18 September 2012) “Z/2011/1178/F Erection of 15 storey, 173 bedroom hotel with basement, including car parking. (Amended Plans) 110 Great Victoria Street Belfast BT2 7BE”.

Discussion on J3373

A visitor to the site has supplied some interesting information about former buildings in Donegall Square South (originally built by Adam McClean J3373 : Donegall Square South (part), Belfast (1981) ) – “ I have a property map showing the row of terraces in Donegall Square South. It depicts No 5 as having almost twice the street frontage of the other eight houses. It seems odd to make one larger than the others.
The map showed that Adam McClean owned the vacant ground (then known as McClean's Fields) from Alfred across to Brunswick St, and from Donegall Square South to the Blackstaff river as far as the old Dublin road. As the area was developed, the name of the purchaser of each block has been written on the lot. This seems to happen until about 1862, with the Ulster Hall being the last entry”.
Charlie Brett described Adam McClean as one of four sons of an innkeeper at Shane’s Castle. That should have been six sons.
