The Harland & Wolff cranes in Belfast
The Harland & Wolff cranes in Belfast
The Harland & Wolff cranes can be seen from much of East Belfast. Known as Goliath and Samson, they both run on 800 metres of track which traverses the Harland & Wolff site. In operation, the cranes move at about 45 metres per minute for loads of up to 100 tons. At its height, the Harland & Wolff shipyard employed 35,000 people but the last ship at the yard was launched in 2003 and since then the yard has focused on design and structural engineering, ship repair and offshore construction projects. Goliath and Samson are both scheduled monuments but both cranes still play a vital role in the shipyard and are in continuous use.
