SU1163 : Lesser Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera bifolia)

taken 17 years ago, near to Alton Priors, Wiltshire, England

Lesser Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera bifolia)
Lesser Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera bifolia)
Much more catholic in its habitat tastes than its close relative, the Greater Butterfly Orchid, this particular example is on chalk grassland. It differs from the Greater Butterfly Orchid in its smaller and generally neater appearance and the pollinia in the flowers, which in the Lesser are parallel, whereas in the Greater they diverge markedly, giving a "gaping" appearance (see TQ1852 : Greater Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera chlorantha)).
