St Eugene's RC Church, Glenknock, Newtownstewart
This lovely church stands out with its tower and white walls and can be seen from surrounding open countryside. It is on the Plumbridge Road in the area locally known as Glenknock or Cloghogle.
Glenock Church is reputed to be the first Catholic church in the diocese of Derry to have a bell in its belfry. This bell which is still rung each evening at 6.00pm can be clearly heard round the surrounding area. In former times workers in the fields stopped to say the Angelus when the bell rang out. I'm told that children loved to hear the bell, because it was a sign that another day's work in the fields was near.
The Angelus Domini, shortened to "the Angelus," is the ringing of the church bell -- in three groups of three chimes with a pause in between each group, followed by 9 consecutive strokes -- at 6am, noon, and 6pm
